Draws cooler outside air instead of preheated air from engine compartment
All internal combustion motors rely on a cool dense air charge for effective combustion with fuel.
What happens if this air is pre-heated to 240 F before it even gets to the turbo? That is what the 01-05 stock Duramax air intake does, when the viscous fan engages, under heavy load, in hot weather.
The fan forces preheated air, from under hood, to the intake, then to the turbo for compression, where it is heated yet further to incredible temperatures, frequently exceeding 600 F. The result is an overheated, less dense air charge that must now be cooled by the intercooler which has limited thermal heat shedding capacity.
In a severe towing application, this is responsible for a severe 60-90 HP drop in power, when combined with the parasitic HP loss of the fan. Hence the vehicle slows on the grade, appearing to lose its power advantage.
This chart is what you will never see with other manufacturers. The red curve is a stock intake with the peaks occuring when the vehicle was stopped. The blue curve shows the True CAI as it isolates outside ambient air from the preheated motor-heated air, for uptake to the turbo compressor. The temperature of the intake air charge is dramatically dampened and lowered.
The result is a more efficient turbo-charger, cooler compression, and denser combustion air charge emerging from the CAC: essentially, more boost, with less turbo work performed. This means higher boost number can be run without damage to the turbo. It also means lower exhaust gas temperature, critical to piston longevity.
