Is 30 MPG Possible?
Even though you will probably not get has high as 30 MPG... I personally believe there is absolutely no reason why light-duty diesel trucks can not get 30 miles per gallon from the factory.
Why? Because over the years I have talked to dozens of truck owners whose older 12 valve Cummins and 7.3L Power Strokes were getting in the 25-30 MPG range.
I even have a friend who is a pioneer in the diesel performance industry that tuned his wife's 2005 Cummins to 28 MPG.
So why do trucks lose mileage every year and now only get 12-14 MPG? Most of this mileage loss I believe is due to DE-TUNING THE POWER CURVE of the engine to meet emissions standards. Even though the trucks have more power... the government is requiring more restrictions on the motor to reduce emissions.
Several years ago I discovered that the simplest way to "bump" up the fuel mileage of a diesel engine was to "increase the engine's torque rise".
By "re-tuning/re-calibrating" the engine's BRAIN BOX with "tried and true" custom fuel and timing maps... we have been able re-adjust the engine's power curve and increase mileage up to 20%.
A lot of our customers that were getting 13-15 MPG have increase their mileage to up to 18-21 MPG after installing our custom tuning.

The ECM, also known as the ECU or PCM, is the "brain box" that controls and manages the injection of fuel into the motor. It does this by using sophisticated formulas and feedback from several engine sensors to regulate the air/fuel ratios.

Properly recalibrating or remapping the engines "fuel and timing tables" results in changing the "peak efficiency" of the motor... which in turn increases its fuel efficiency.

When the factory takes the power from the bottom-end and moves it further up the RPM just to cut emissions... you also lose the power you need to get big loads moving out of the hole.
